SINGER AMY WINEHOUSE DEAD AT 27

UPDATE: SKY SOURCES BELIEVE SINGER DIED FROM OVERDOSE

(blackmediaSCOOP) Singer Amy Winehouse has been found DEAD at her apartment in London. She was 27!

The Rehab singer, 27, was discovered at the property in north London by emergency services at around 3:54pm this afternoon.

A police statement said: “Police were called by London Ambulance Service to an address in Camden Square Saturday JULY 23 , following reports of a woman found deceased.

“On arrival officers found the body of a 27-year-old female who was pronounced dead at the scene.

“Inquiries continue into the circumstances of the death. At this early stage it is being treated as unexplained.”
Amy had recently cancelled all tour dates and engagements after a series of erratic public appearances.

But she appeared with her goddaughter (SEEN ABOVE) Dionne Bromfield earlier this week at the iTunes festival where she urged the crowd to buy the young singer’s album.

Amy had battled drink and drugs problems throughout her career.

She was an English singer-songwriter, known for her powerful contralto vocals and her eclectic mix of various musical genres including R&B, soul, and jazz. She had received publicity over her substance abuse and mental health issues. Winehouse died today SATURDAY on July 23 2011 in, as yet, unexplained circumstances.

Winehouse’s 2003 debut album Frank was critically successful in the UK, and was nominated for the Mercury Prize. Her 2006 follow-up album Back to Black led to six Grammy Award nominations and five wins, tying the record for the most wins by a female artist in a single night, and made Winehouse the first British singer to win five Grammys, including three of the “Big Four”: Best New Artist, Record of the Year and Song of the Year.

In February 2007, she won a BRIT Award for Best British Female Artist; she had also been nominated for Best British Album. She has won the Ivor Novello Award three times, one in 2004 for Best Contemporary Song (musically and lyrically) for “Stronger Than Me”, one in 2007 for Best Contemporary Song for “Rehab”, and one in 2008 for Best Song Musically and Lyrically for “Love Is a Losing Game”, among other prestigious distinctions. The album was the third biggest seller of the 2000s in the United Kingdom.

Amy joins the notorious 27 Club, also known as Forever 27, which is a group of musicians who have all died at the age while struggling to cope with fame.

Rolling Stone Jones drowned in a swimming pool in 1969; Hendrix choked to death in 1970 after mixing wine with sleeping pills and singer Janis Joplin suffered a suspected heroin overdose the same year.

Doors star Morrison died of heart failure in 1971.

Nicki Minaj Incident Report Released

Update: According to an update by the Dallas Observer, the person who struck Nicki Minaj is Safaree Samuels, her hypeman. See their message regarding the police report below:

Yesterday evening, TMZ reported that Nicki Minaj was ‘struck in the lip’ during an argument with a male friend that she was staying with while poolside at a Dallas hotel. Despite tweets to her fans that suggest the incident was fabricated, the incident report has been released by the Dallas Observer who obtained the report from police.

According to the report, a hotel employee was instructed by Nicki Minaj to call the police. When the cops came, she told them that a verbal argument with a man that began by the pool. When she returned to her room, the man had some of his personal belongings in her suitcase and she told him she didn’t want him to take anything from her room. She looked in the suitcase, the man picked it up and in the process, shoved it across her chin and lower lip causing it to bleed. She told police that she did not want to file a report, she just wanted her suitcase back. She also revealed that she and the man were only friends, never been in an intimate relationship and were not related.

Although TMZ is stating that the man who struck her with the suitcase is her hypeman Safaree Samuals, there are also two other men listed on the report in addition to Safaree. The Dallas Observer is reporting that the man that struck her is actually named ‘Rex Chevalier’, which is stated as Wit 1 on the police report.

Dallas Police Department just called in with a correction, saying that they’d accidentally swapped the names of Rex Chevalier and Safaree Samuels in the report. Samuels was the one who “shoved” the suitcase in Minaj’s face, not Chevalier. It’s an important reveal, since Samuels and Minaj have a long history. Makes Minaj’s insistence in the report that she had never been “intimate” with the alleged assailant all the more interesting, that’s for sure.

Miguel & Lloyd Squash Their Hair Beef… Kinda…

It’s no secret that R&B Singers Lloyd and Miguel aren’t the best of friends after Miguel made a side comment about Lloyd’s hair via his twitter a few weeks ago. After Lloyd appeared on ’106 and Park’ to promote his new album and showed off his new hair tattoo, Miguel tweeted ‘Imitation is the highest form of flattery. Shouts to Lloyd’.

This past weekend, the two artists performed at ZHip Hop Cleveland’s Summer Jam and had the opportunity to meet face to face to iron out their differences backstage. Attempting to light up the mood backstage, Miguel started singing “We’re brothers, we’re happy and we’re singing and we’re colored” but Lloyd was not laughing. He immediately asked why Miguel sent out the ‘imitation’ tweet and Miguel responded that it was made out bigger than what it was:

‘I was being honest. That was an honest opinion. But it’s not on diss sh*t though. Nothing about it was a diss at all. You know n*ggas are trying to make it way bigger than anything it really was. They asked me a question about a site I was looking at. Yo, it shouldn’t have been said as honest as I may have been. If it was like me and you having a conversation, and I said it to you it would have been different. But the fact that I said it on twitter, it was f*cked up and I apologize for that.

Lloyd responded:

I just felt like it was disrespectful. On some real sh*t, I felt like it was cheap, distasteful jab. The idea behind it wasn’t to mock you or imitate you. It was just to shave my sh*t so I could get a tattoo. I’m growing it back because it really isn’t my thing. For you to say that and bring all that kind of energy to me during my album release week…. Why am I answering questions about my hair when I should actually be talking about my sh*t. I worked two years for it, you see what I’m saying?

Miguel agreed that it was the wrong thing to say at the wrong time, especially not knowing the reasoning behind it, and apologized once again.

Perhaps, the two will let bygones be bygones and make a nice record together.

Lengthy NBA lockout looms, with owners and players deeply divided

Just weeks after the conclusion of a season that featured riveting story lines and soaring interest, the NBA is about to become the second professional sports league since March to shut down operations because its players and owners can’t agree on how to divide league revenue.

If a deal isn’t reached during an 11th-hour negotiating session Thursday, the NBA is expected to lock players out of team facilities in an attempt to force their hand in collective bargaining negotiations, following the lead of NFL owners who imposed a lockout 15 weeks ago.

<:article>But unlike with the NFL’s players and owners, who most experts project will resolve their differences before the start of the upcoming season, the NBA could face a much longer and more painful work stoppage. The two sides remain deeply divided over what percentage of revenue the players should receive, whether teams should have a hard cap on payrolls, and how owners should share their money.

“We may not see movement until it gets close to the end of the year,” said Marc Ganis, president and founder of the Chicago-based sports consulting firm SportsCorp. “Players have been so well paid for so long, they can hold out for longer than most of the other sports. NBA players don’t have the same [financial] issues as NFL players, who are very eager to get back on the field.

“This one is likely to be a long lockout. It could be half a season; it potentially could be a whole season.”

The last NBA lockout, which began in July 1998, did not end until January 1999, and the season was shortened to 50 games.

NBA Commissioner David Stern, deputy commissioner Adam Silver, San Antonio Spurs owner Peter Holt and New York Knicks owner James Dolan are scheduled to meet with NBA Players Association chief Billy Hunter, player representative Derek Fisher and two other NBA players Thursday afternoon in New York. The collective bargaining agreement is set to expire at midnight. Neither side is expected to make major concessions at the meeting.

“Our expectation is go in and move closer to a deal. And, if not get a deal, at least find out where everybody’s position really is,” said Maurice Evans, vice president of the players’ union and Washington Wizards free agent, who will attend Thursday’s meeting. “It really hasn’t been a lot of posturing. They firmly believe what they want to believe, and I feel like we firmly believe what it is we believe — that the system isn’t broken and if we are going to negotiate, we need to negotiate from the current system.”

Though NBA owners turned over their books to the players, the union has disputed the league’s claims that 22 of its 30 teams are losing money. Owners want a new system that includes a hard cap on team payroll — NBA officials have used the term “flex cap” because it would allow for latitude within a prescribed range — and a larger share of the league’s $4 billion in annual revenue.

Ted Leonsis, who just completed his first season as owner of the Washington Wizards, said Monday his team was among those that lost money last year.

[Updated at 2:50 p.m.] Defense Attorney Jose Baez said he had mixed emotions about the case and that he had to work hard against media bias that existed during the search for Caylee and the case against Casey Anthony.

“You cannot convict someone until they have their day in court,” he said.

Baez said he was happy for Casey Anthony and the decision made by the jury. Now he hopes Casey Anthony can move on.

“I want her to grieve and to grow and somehow get her life back together,” he said.

Baez said the case was a true example of a jury doing what they are supposed to – finding their verdict based on evidence and not emotion.

“We have the greatest constitution in the world and if the media and other members of the public don’t respect it, it will become meaningless,” he said. “And today and yesterday on the Fourth of July,  there was a breath of life.”

Baez said he is thrilled that when he goes home today and his daughter asks what he did today he can say – “I saved a life.”

“I think this case is a perfect example for why the death penalty does not work… ” Baez added. “Murder is not right no matter who does it.”

[Updated at 2:45 p.m.] Dorothy Clay Sims speaking first for the defense team addressed the media.

“I am thankful for today’s verdict on behalf of Casey Anthony,” she said.

Defense Attorney Cheney Mason also addressed the media, angrily scolding them for their coverage of the case.

“I hope that this is a lesson to those who have indulged in media assassination for three years,” he said.

Defense Attorney Jose Baez added that “while we’re happy for Casey there are no winners in this case.”

“Caylee has passed on far, far too soon, and what my driving force has been for the past three years is to make sure there has been justice for Caylee and Casey,” he said. “Casey did not murder Caylee, it’s that simple. And today our system of justice has not dishonored her memory by a false conviction.”

[Updated at 2:34 p.m.] A room is being prepared for the jury to take questions from the media about their verdict.

[Updated at 2:31 p.m.] For the first time a wide smile came across Casey Anthony’s face. She began to smile and laugh as her team surrounded her and congratulated her on the verdict.

[Updated at 1:45 p.m.] The jury has reached a verdict in the Casey Anthony capital murder trial, according to staff at the Orange County, Florida, courthouse.

The verdict, reached by the seven-woman, five-man jury, will cap a trial that stretched to more than six weeks and featured allegations of sexual abuse, questions regarding Casey Anthony’s competence and various theories on what happened to 2-year-old Caylee.

The verdict is scheduled to be read at 2:15 p.m ET.

Casey Anthony, 25, was charged with seven counts – first-degree murder, aggravated child abuse, aggravated manslaughter of a child and four counts of providing false information to a law-enforcement officer in Caylee’s 2008 disappearance and death.

Facebook Will Launch In-Browser Video Chat Next Week In Partnership With Skype

Earlier this week while visiting Seattle, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg tipped off Seattle press that the company would be launching an “awesome” new productnext week that has been built by Facebook’s Seattle team. The press invitations to that event went out today, saying nothing more than “Please join us for an event at Facebook” on July 6.

So what is the new product? MG Siegler speculates here that it might have a desktop component given all the desktop software hiring going on in Seattle.

And he’s right. This isn’t the main project that team is working on, but next week, says a source with knowledge of the partnership, Facebook will launch a new video chat product, powered by Skype, that works in browser. Suddenly those chat icons in the invitation have a lot more meaning.

The product has been built on Skype and will include a desktop component. It’s not clear to me whether that means it will just work if a user has Skype already installed on the computer, or if additional software will need to be downloaded even if the user already uses Skype. But it’s clear that there’s very deep integration between the products, and from the user’s perspective, the product will be an in browser experience.

Facebook and Skype have already been working together, including integration of various Facebook features into the Skype service.

But this is something else entirely. The partnership could substantially increase Skype usage. Facebook has more than 750 million active users. Currently Skype has just 170 million. And it will certainly help Facebook become even stickier for users as they start to have voice and video chat as an option to communicate.

And this also brings Facebook even closer to Microsoft, which is a Facebook shareholder and has a pending acquisition of Skype. The guys in Redmond must be smiling today, something that happens far too infrequently at Microsoft HQ.
